Limited PvP in PoE (The Equal Playing Ground)

Sounds awesome - almost too good to be true.

Or actually, thinking about it, the drafting part would not even need to be in-game. Everything could be done via some sleek website interface opening for the event, and then when you are done you log in and everything is into the stash. It would also be an awesome way to start testing out the future trade-by-forum functionality. You see, you just have to do it now.

tl;dr EHRMAHGERD DO IT

I really like that idea. It might be fun to have online draft be 30min before so you can work out a build real quick.

Maybe all of the gear could be distributed randomly between the players, and you have a 30 minute trade session with your opponents. Call it Wolf of PVP
Sounds great, sans the currency buy-in and rewards.
+1000

This is the type of stuff we need to get more people into PvP.
my only problem with this is that you seem to draw a parallel between MgT cards and gear which is very hard to do.
In MtG cards are widely different and specific cards can be very good for some strats
In PoE gear mostly revolves around the same things, the marginal strategy items being very rare.

What I mean is that the beauty of MtG is that cards hold different values for different players as the strategies which employ them are widely different. In PoE if we are talking about Gear, pretty much everyone is looking for the same things.

Even support gems follow the same pattern in PoE so you cannot really "draft" support gems.

A draft like system works only when the items available for draft are holding a relative value to different strategies. In PoE the good items/gems are all way too close to one another for this to be a healthy game mode.

The biggest issue is that in MTG, you have 40 cards, with the majority of them being of average power level. This makes it easier to balance versus PoE, where you have 10-12 item slots (plus extra inventory space), where items have higher variance than MTG cards.

I don't think the variance is quite as bad as you make it out to be, though. Sure, the jackpot is to hit a PDPS+IPD weapon, or a +1 skill/faster cast wand - that's the equivalent to your mythic rare, if you will. However, the majority of players (depending on how many items they will get to choose from) will still get a decent elemental damage weapon, or a wand with spell damage + another relevant stat. If you don't get a good damage weapon, maybe you're lucky on resists, and will mitigate the other person's stronger weapon!

Maybe you get an elemental damage weapon or bow, then you need to know which class you can utilize it best with. Which class has elemental damage nodes at the start? :). If you get a physical weapon, depending on type, you'll also have to make an intelligent choice. If you get a +skill item, same thing again.

If you get a wand with +% lightning damage and +% spell damage, maybe you can build some kind of Arc+Spark character. Etc.

Even though it's possible to get the NUT equipment, most people will, by sheer likelihood, get just average equipment. In MTG, Sealed Deck is extremely high variance. If you get a good pool, you can win the tournament even if you're not a great player. If you get a mediocre pool, you can win the tournament if you're a great player. I actually think PoE would work similarly, as long as you're given a large enough pool of items to choose from when making your character.

The variance in item mods/stats could be adjusted for these PvP modes, to make sure it's slightly less RNG based. MTG has less variance because of a larger selection, PoE could be similarly balanced by either dropping more items, or reducing mod variance. I quite like the added RNG element - sometimes you'll have a good run, sometimes bad, but most of the time it'll just be average and you have to make the best out of it based on your game knowledge :)

The idea was also that skill gems wouldn't be drafted. Once you have your gear, you get to freely pick gems and character class.

You can get paired up/down in Swiss tournament if there's a mismatch in how many players there are in the tournament. However, the system is designed to always match you against someone with as equal a record as possible.

Fuck yeah, sealed.

Better yet, do drafting by having players teleport to other instances in a ring after they select an item from the chest. Allows for creativity and evens out lucky draws and introduces hate-picking/counter-picking/banning meta-gameplay.

Constructed can fuck off. :)
