Exception - Buffer Underflow when attacking mobs after Steam update (29 May)
|
Hi,
Problem Since the Steam update on May 29th, I'm getting Exception - Buffer Underflow crashes. Everything was working fine throughout the entire league before this update. Stable in Hideout and towns. Crash occurs only when entering Acts, Maps, or any Endgame content — specifically when attacking any monster. System Specs OS: Windows 11 Pro CPU: Intel Core i5-10400F @ 2.90GHz RAM: 16 GB GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6GB Storage: SSD 500GB Graphics Settings Renderer: DirectX12 Triple Buffering: Enabled Multithreading: Enabled What I've already tried 1. Deleted ShaderCache and Minimap folders in %AppData%\Path of Exile 2. Changed Renderer and all graphics settings 3. Switched between different gateways (Paris, Frankfurt, Moscow) 4. Changed Hideout, recreated instances in Acts, tested Valdo's, Einar's Menagerie, and regular maps — crash happens everywhere when attacking a mob 5. Verified game files via Steam 6. Restarted both the game and PC Issue is still present as of May 30th. Screenshot ![]() Last bumped on May 30, 2026, 9:30:09 AM

I had the same problem, removing all MTX from my character fixed the issue for me. Equipping the MTX again after still seems fine.
Hope this works for u as wel :) |

Thanks for your reply,
Removing all MTX completely fixed the crashing, but, as soon as I equip any MTX back and try to attack a monster, the game crashes again with Exception - Buffer Underflow :( |

Equipping after image flicker strike causes it every time I attack.
It's worth noting that +2 maps are a dangerous thing.
They can cause players to get out of their depth - playing maps that are too hard for the items they currently have. Herp Derp. |

When equiping my mtx again i forgot to equip the flickerstrike mtx again. After equiping the afterimage flicker strike mtx i get the buffer underflow crash again. The ghost and demonic flicker strike mtx do not cause the problem so seems to be related to the afterimage flicker strike effect specifically.
