GPU options - 8GB VRAM enough?
|
I currently have an rtx 2060 super with 3440x1440 monitor. It looks like the game uses around 5GB Vram in maps with deli. I'm just wondering if 8GB is enough across all content. I don't particularly care about other games so it's a niche quesiton I guess.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Last bumped on Apr 21, 2026, 1:20:08 PM

Which game?
It's called "Technical Support (Path of Exile 1)" but there's no equivalent forum section for the sequel, so people usually just post here regardless of which game they're playing at that moment in time. GGG do not offer first-party Technical Support.

Ah, okay - for PoE 2 I definitely would've said no; at least, not for 1440p UW.
For PoE 1 it's a bit harder to say, as the game can be a bit more inconsistent WRT resource allocation. If you're willing to be flexible on the resolution and / or have Dynamic Resolution enabled in the game's settings, then you're probably going to be fine for the long-term. If it absolutely has to run native with no compromises, then I suspect that, if 8 GB is presently enough, it won't be for much longer. GGG do gradually replace art assets and parts of their graphics pipeline in major content patches, and 1440p UW is asking quite a lot of a RTX 2060 S. GGG do not offer first-party Technical Support.

Thank you for the reply. The 2060 s obviously tanks in maps to 20-30 fps or so but I think most cards will also.
For now I might just let it chug along until the 8GB isn't enough or something changes and it can't handle it at all any more. These days gpus are a bit expensive so I'll just keep an eye out for something too. Thank you |

" In most such scenarios the CPU will be the bottleneck. But I'm inclined to suspect even removing any processor or system memory constraints, the 2060 Super's VRAM likely isn't the bottleneck. When it launched, it was reviewed by people testing games both at 1920 x 1080 and 2560 x 1440 - you are, instead, running games at 3440 x 1440. The card's just not designed for that, so I'm not surprised to hear you have performance drops. Personally, if I had an ultrawide monitor and I was running a 2060 Super, I'd probably run most or all games in 2560 × 1080 as that's much more appropriate for the video card. It could be informative to test the game at 2560 × 1080 (or lower) to see how it shapes performance. If you're still getting drops down to the 20s and 30s, you're dealing with a CPU bottleneck and so you could try making targeted changes to the settings accordingly. If performance is notably better, then most likely the GPU's number of cores, clock speed, and IPC just isn't sufficient for 1440p UW. GGG do not offer first-party Technical Support.

For a system about 6-7 years old, I'd say it's time for a new pc. 8GB is not quite enough for 3440x1440 which sits between 4k and 1440p. You want 12GB or better but you also want to make sure it's a newer chip. The 2060 super is some generations behind and I would only run that at 1080p in-game for the time being.
