Blight unplayable as controller duo

Since they released the patch where building towers pauses the game, it has become a nightmare for my partner and I to do a blight map/blight encounter together. One person needs to stay in the paused screen, which 50% of the time it still won't pause the game, and then it causes the person building the towers to build the wrong tower, due to the "tower select option" jumping around like crazy, it fails to stay on the tower you wish to build. We are playing on PC with a controller.
