Removing modifiers such as with orb of annulment generally does not downgrade the type (magic, rare, etc.) of the item. For example, repeatedly using orb of annulment on a rare jewel can result in a rare jewel with zero modifiers.
I think the only exception is using an orb of scouring on a rare item with a fractured mod. This will remove all modifiers except the fractured mod and change the item to magic. Last edited by mnieradko#6070 on Oct 17, 2025, 9:21:15 AM

You could always scour the item and then augment it, however that won't keep any of the explicit mods...
I doubt that there is a way to keep the explicits while downgrading an item. |

prefix can not be changed + scour = magic item (has to have max. 1 prefix)
and vice versa for suffixes also fractured items like already mentioned other ways don't come to my mind |

can also use the new crafting bench craft for item rarity, tho you run the small risk of it turning into a unique (depending on base type)
“Freedom is what we do with what is done to us.”

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think splitting (menagerie) can result in magic items as well (at least the three-way split),

" it does, but thats not how id choose to do it over scour or craft bench “Freedom is what we do with what is done to us.”

" I guess it depends on what you want to achieve and what you are crafting on. If you are interested in e.g. synth implicits, I agree with your method. If you want to isolate a valuable mod from a 6 mod item, e.g. a grasping mail mod, splitting should be the safest start. |
