How to know what killed you?

I am often in a map, where the modifiers are nothing unusual, standing alone picking up loot long after fighting. Then my 7k+ hp hits 0 and I die. There are no mobs, no ground effects, no explosions or sparks.

Is there some kind of key command or log to see what killed you? at least the damage type?

This keeps happening and I have no idea what is doing it.

There's nothing like you have mentioned currently, or coming soon that I'm aware of.

The best thing you can do is look for weaknesses in you build, or have other people take a look, that might know. Another thing you can do pay attention to the mobs, mods or mechanics that might be giving you trouble, and try to work it out from there.

Beyond this, if you have the ability to record some of your play, you can slow it down and see what might be the cause on replay. This can be a lot of effort, and requires extra load on performance, but it can be useful for learning a lot of the mechanics. Pausing now can also be helpful, for checking debuf and other things. If it is too dangerous to do without increasing risk or happening too fast before you die, you might be able to see something in the death screen afterwads.

Sounds strange, which of your characters are you using, someone can take a look? For something to do that much damage under normal conditions, there are limited things it could be. Some things to check of would be any reflect or low life mechanics. Much easier to look at the specific character to rule things out first, then move on to potential things on the map or area that might be the cause.
My guess would be corrupting blood or some on death mechanic killed you. Really there is lots of stuff that can kill you after monsters are dead in this game. Once you learn what the common ones are and how to defend vs them it happens a lot less often. Most of the on death effects are dealt with by just always be moving and never back tracking. If it was corrupting blood that killed you there are mastery's that can help with that or corrupted jewel implicit for corrupted blood immunity. One of the other things that gets a lot of people is detonate dead totems on a map with totems. If dd hits you while standing on a rare monsters body your basically one tapped. And dd totems can spawn off screen and still get you. There really isn't any good defense or way to avoid that one besides just not standing on dead bodys or not running totem maps.
