Cannot socket skill gems in meta gems while another copy of the skill is in a main skill slot

If I Fireball and Elemental Invocation in my skill slots, I cannot socket Fireball inside Elemental Invocation unless I remove the main Fireball first. Then after I place the other fireball inside Elemental Invocation, I can place the other fireball back inside a main skill slot. This is very clunky as I have to add all my support gems back one at a time.
