Steam Account Linking and MTX Retention

Hello Path of Exile Support Team,

I am currently playing Path of Exile through my Steam account, which already has a large number of MTX purchases (microtransactions such as stash tabs, cosmetics, and other items). Now, I want to log in to your original website

I recently tried to link my Steam account to another (original ID) Path of Exile account, but I saw a warning message that the Steam account is already associated with an existing account. Before I proceed, I want to make sure I do not lose access to my MTX and progress.

Could you please clarify:

1. If I link my Steam account to a different Path of Exile account, will all my MTX and characters transfer over?

2. If not, how can I ensure that I keep all of my MTX, stash tabs, and characters tied to my Steam account?

3. Is it possible to merge accounts or recover MTX if I accidentally link to the wrong account?

I want to avoid losing any MTX or progress, so I would greatly appreciate your guidance on the safest way to proceed.

Do not link your Steam account to a Path of Exile account.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to play Path of Exile without a Path of Exile account - only a Path of Exile account can store information such as your characters, your MTX purchases, your achievements, and so on. You can test this by creating a new Steam account and trying to play Path of Exile - before allowing you to do so for the first time, you will be prompted by Steam to create a new Path of Exile account or link your Steam account to an existing Path of Exile account.

If you link your Steam account to a new Path of Exile account, it will overwrite the current link and you will lose access to your existing characters, progression, and MTX. Steam just acts as a different way of logging into a Path of Exile account - that's all it does.

What you want to do is log out of the website, and then log in again. The log in page has an option for logging in using Steam - if you log into the game using Steam, you should also log into the website using Steam. If you would like to be able to log into your Path of Exile account without Steam, you can add alternative account credentials through the website once you log into it using the right account. Again - do not perform account linking; you've already done that in the past.
