Resources from maps not going anywere

The deposits you can find while mapping also have recourses for shipping. but when i finish a map that had some deposits and then try and sent a ship out i dont have any of those resources available to ship.

Maybe i just misunderstand how it all works but to me the deposits seem pointless

Find ore in map causes the ore to be marked.
You then assign miners to convert marked ore into mined ore.
You can then either ship the mined ore, or smelt the mined ore into bars that are worth more (I think 10x value of shipping ores? Been awhile since I shipped ore/bars).

I figured i was missing something.
