PoE causing circuit breaker to trip
I have never seen this happen or even heard of this before today. I've always been used to PoE using a lot of power (always 'Very High' power usage in task manager) and I think it has caused my pc in the past to just shut down, but I've never heard of it causing circuit breakers to trip. I thought it was a random power surge at first, but I loaded up PoE again for about a minute before it happened again.
Is this a PoE problem? A PSU problem? A circuit problem? I'm not an electrician so I don't know exactly what's going on here. I always thought a PSU rated for X watts can never draw more than that from the wall, so if PoE tries to draw more than X watts (somehow) then the PC would just shut off. But it still doesn't make sense why a single game is trying to draw so much power, and also that it's getting by the PSU failsafe and going straight to the wall. Has anyone had this happen before? Any ideas how to troubleshoot? AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.70GHz 12-Core GeForce RTX 3080 10GB G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB DDR4-3600 Last bumped on Aug 10, 2025, 12:10:47 PM

" I am not an electrician, either - but Path of Exile has a seven-digit install base on PC, and you are the only one posting about this. In that context, I would first try a replacement PSU and - if that fails - consider contacting a professional electrician for assistance. What is the manufacturer & model of your PSU? " The wattage cited on the box is the maximum possible output to other components in your system; the idea is that you can use that number directly to determine whether a given PSU would be sufficient for the components in your system, without performing any calculations. There will always be a degree of inefficiency (power lost in the form of heat), so a PSU's intake and output will never be identical. The box will always cite the usable power distributed to your system. |
