Better idea:
Make it so that when you die one of your skill gems gets deleted.
Random of course.
And if more than 2 gems from the same item get deleted then the item they were socketed into get deleted.
So if you die 3 times and the first 2 deleted gems in your body armor then your body armor gets deleted as well.

Going by the very long thread of people wanting xp penalty completely removed, I doubt that would be popular. I think 10 is a good amount. I think the boss xp penalty changes for progression were relatively good this league too.
I can understand with this and the introduction of omens that some people think the xp is too easy now as well though.
