Confusion about a build guide

So I decided to follow this guide: https://maxroll.gg/poe/build-guides/volcanic-fissure-of-snaking-berserker

...as it seemed not that bad for a beginner to grasp.

Well, turns out that following the guide has been a trainwreck so far. I applied the filter linked, got the gems from the tutorial and the first quest, and I'm getting constantly killed by bosses.

Nothing seems to drop except these magic boots I got, and I'm confused about the gems - there's a "Full Gem List" for levels 1 to 12, however it's different from the gems listed below and their obtainment methods.

Also, this might be more of a general PoE question but how do you get an item with 3 linked red sockets as listed in the gem list?

Clearly I'm lacking some understanding about how exactly to follow the guide.

Edit: I'm getting killed even by small packs of blue mobs and couldn't even deal 20% of the damage to a merc. I must be missing something very important about the build because I got further even when I was going in blind.

As a general rule of thumb avoid maxroll. It's made and maintained by clueless diablo enjoyers.

Delete that filter, you don't need one until endgame. Pick up some loot, preferably pure armour based and a 2 hander.

You're getting smoked because you have literally ZERO defences and resists.

Sockets colours favour certain base types. Red for pure armour, green for pure evasion and blue for pure energy shield.

Any recommendations on places to get build guides then if not Maxroll?
Your best bet as a pure beginner is to go on youtube and find a build guide where someone actually levels the character as they go, that way you can follow along.
The guide is created by Tuna, Id consider him a trustworthy source so I dont see why you shouldnt be able to follow this.

The amount of sockets on gear that can drop is limited by the zones lvl you are currently in. 3linked could already drop but are somewhat rare this early, especially if you are looking for a specific colour combo.
Keep in mind that each lvlup of your character will trigger a partial reroll of vendor inventories, so checking them out for linked gear isnt a bad idea.

As a general rule of thumb:
You wanna avoid having your most important link on weapons, so you are able to switch to better weapon asap when you get one.
For the campaign having 2 or 3 items with 4 links is usually enough, since those links are very important its ok if those items are just magic (blue), the rest of the gear however has to make up for that tho so you can cap out your resistances and get more life too.

As for specific gems:
Each and every flask vendor in every town (Nessa in act1) does sell them gems you did already unlock by completing quests.
If you wanna check the gems she sells, open her second tab of items and browse the list of gems.
If youhavent completed any quests yet, there wont be many gems showing up but that´ll change as you go.

The gems themselves are fine; I know that more gems to buy will unlock after quests.

My problems are the inconsistencies between the "full gem list" and the gems listed below it, and items barely dropping.

Is the loot filter provided too strict? I assumed that since it was the only one provided, it would be applicable in all cases.
^ Well, this one was already answered by Arandan:

I'd say at least for Act 1 - Act 3 a Filter is not really necessary.

What do you mean with this:

In the Levelling Section of the Guide are 9 gems shown which you can allocate in Act 1. Those are the only ones you should care about.
relax - it's just ones and zeros!

The filter might be too strict yeah, never used that one myself.
Nothing wrong with turning it off early on so you get more loot on your screen.

Just keep going
