How do you find infamous mercs?

Im finding roughly 1 every 30 maps. I have no idea how you are expected to do the challenge that requires you find 15, especially considering how you will find a lot of duplicates.

is there special "really" good ones?
infamous mercs supposedly have better gear/loot/gems, and they also have a piece of gear with an exclusive affix that doesnt appear anywhere else in the game
Not sure there is any tricks, maybe something to do with exiling. I'm starting to get through that challenge. I'm more concerned at the moment for the one where you need to take a piece of infamous gear of each item slot. I'm level 98 levelling mostly in maps and doing Mercs every map, but so far have only had belt offered.

Fight every merc that you come across and you increase the average renown status of the next one you encounter making infamous mercs more likely to appear. When you come across one, look at its inventory, and leave without fighting it or lose to them- it lowers the average renown of the next encounter.

Edit: added "or lose to them"

Yeah I'm not getting many. I think OP wants to know if there's any way of increasing the chance of infamous beyond that. Are there any further factors that might increase the chances. Like map quant? Or is it purely random and some of us are just encountering a lack from RNG. For reference, I think I've had about 6 and would of done hundreds of Mercs by this stage. I'm level 98, full atlas complete and I do them every map when I come across them, beating them close to 100% at this stage.

That's possible, I left the basic info just in case they weren't aware. I don't personally know of any way to increase the likelihood. I think it's intended that they don't show up as often but it is pretty rare, I fight every merc and I might only have fought a handful of infamous mercs after 6 hours of mapping.

I do have my challenge completed though, the infamous gear pieces and infamous mercenaries slain between 3 builds. Hours played and /kills I'd have to check when I get home though.

That's the one I am trying to complete currently. So far I only have one piece. Would you be able to tell me, do you have to take an infamous piece for the challenge, or can you take any piece, so long as there was and infamous piece being offered? I was a little unclear from reading it. Regardless, so far I have only been offered the belt that I have noticed. Even when they are found

I'm starting to get the other one done. Doesn't seem as hard to get the specific Mercs ticked off, since it can be influenced by exiling. I'm wondering if this may have an effect on the items as well. Maybe I am only getting infamous belt, because of the type of infamous mods that can roll on belt. Seems like a strength/phys mod and maybe I need to block that.

I'm also wondering if there is any advantaged to hiring infamous Mercs? Do they have any extra power beyond their starting equipment? How much of a difference does their character level make? Currently i'm using a lvl 79 Merc, since it has attributes I want. I'm wondering if I should be trying to get it as lvl 83, and if to do that, I would need to exile my current Merc, as it doesn't seem like that one gets offered again why hired. It would be difficult to get it back ith the same skills though.

If this is the case, that it is not offered while you have them on your team, it could also be used for blocking to help with targeting the achievements, or the one you want to find. Giving a slight increased probability of finding the right ones, by having the wrong ones on your roster.

You have to win the piece with the infamous mod on it, not just take any piece.

I do believe this is how it works but I'm not 100% certain.

All I know is they are the ones that carry the "of infamy" pieces and typically have better gear but other than that I'm not sure if they have better skill combinations or anything like that. Currently running a non-infamous cruel mistress and she gives my Forbidden Rite Occultist Envy and Despair but I'm looking for one with Zealotry and Despair, not sure myself if that only appears on an infamous merc or not but I've yet to even find another cruel mistress after I hired that one lol.

I would definitely try to get a lvl 83 merc as that's as strong as they get. There are lots of people claiming that they can still encounter the same merc that they have hired but like I said earlier I am having trouble finding a cruel mistress after having hired one which led to me wondering the same thing.
Thanks for the help.

Yeah that's good to know, I will just keep any eye out for the level 83. Might be that is is just rare or RNG and not prevented. Currently I'm mainly using it for buffs, item combination and the skills. I have noticed it actually does do a reasonable amount of damage at lvl79, so 83 might be good upgrade on that if it's a further increase.
