game freezes when exiting to character selection, unable to connect to wdc01.login.pathofexile.com

When I exit to character selection (rather than to log in screen), the game often freezes, and I have to restart it. When this occurs, the last line in my client log is

"

Async connecting to wdc01.login.pathofexile.com:20481

When starting the game up, on the log in screen, I often have to hit the "log in" button multiple times; when this happens, my log file says the following:

"

Async connecting to wdc01.login.pathofexile.com:20481
Unable to connect to login server.
