The state of acquiring transfigured gems in SSFHC is STILL in an abysmal state.

1st time they were introduced I farmed 12hours.. 12 HOURS of Merc Lab until I found Detonate Dead of Chain Reaction.
2nd time a few leagues later it took me... 8 HOURS of braindead lab farm
3rd time this league I was playing SSFHC once again and opted to try something else that needed a transfigured gem. I am 3hours in.. 30+ LABS.. STILL NOTHING. I got 3x change to non-trans version and all came of the wrong one. 4th one that was the first I made a mistake and used it on a 20% qual gem I had that I use to get the transfigured.. got the transfigured version of that random gem.. ok i can live with forgetting it after not playing for so long time..
But this.. this is NOT the right way to acquire trans gems in POE imo.. in Trade its fine, you just pay 1c or 100c or whatever, you get it. In SSF.. its bad BUT when you DIE.. you still have it.. in SSFHC I get the gem, die in first map... YEP.. BACK TO LAB.. 8-12hours of braindead content.. its NOT FUN and its NOT CHALLENGING, only frustrating.
For the love of god.. change your mind on how to acquire these from next league onwards.. or dont.. poe2 out next.

To be fair the game is not balanced around ssf.
Trans gems are a lot more ssf friendly compared to the former alt quality heist gems.
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

Dont like the current state of Trans gems in SSF either. But your numbers seem very far off the norm. It would be more useful if the measure used would be number of font uses instead of time spent.
Merciless lab supposedly has a 10% chance to get the "random trans version of gem" option. And IME uber lab is better than Merc but it has the issue that you dont have the gem for the build until then, which is one of the issues I dont like about Trans gems in SSF. Blue gems with 2 Trans versions are especially bad = RNG prone.
No wonder it's lost, it's in the middle of the jungle!
I kid you not, 5minutes or 1xLab after I made my post I got the gem.. oh god. I can finally play the videogame.

Oh and it was Ice Nova of Frostbolts this time.

Time to rip and do it all over again. :)

I'm not totally defending the lab but.....

you did this 2 times already spending over 20+ hours in total, and then STILL decided to run a build in SSF that relies on a specific trans gem?

1st time shame on them
2nd time shame on you
3rd time.....
4th time.....?!@?!@?!@

At what point does it cease being the game's fault, and start becoming YOUR fault for not adapting to your self-inflicted limitation of SSF? There is such a thing as "learning" involved here.

Much like how you would edit a typical "trade" build to have a heck of a lot more defenses in HC, it is on YOU to not choose to run a 'rare' transfigured main in a game setting where you KNOW its a real pain in the a to find. Unless you have already accepted and are willing to do the grind. After all, the SSF grind is what you CHOSE to do.

yeah it is a pretty bad system no matter how you slice it. I get them wanting Labyrinth to have a really interesting/cool reward, but it should be something like a veiled chaos or those jewels.

Putting builds behind lab grinding just blows.

but is it REALLY any different than build enabling uniques gated behind rng drops, or behind uber bosses? The player chooses their own adventure, but there are ALWAYS going to be builds gated behind a grind. It's the very essence of the game.

Whether that grind is the skill itself or the necessary unique item...i see no real difference.

Yarp. I run lab a bunch of times anyway and will gather a few interesting gems along the way. Or I run labs for gem XP on Empower/Enlighten/Enhance and gems are a side product of that.

A lot less of a hazzle than running Heist for gems. That crap was awful.
