This is not the filter being in need of an update.

There is a base assumption, once you make it to up to Strict or above, that you know enough about how the game works, that you'll press the button if you kill a boss and no unique shows up on your filter.

The idea is that hiding the cheap/common unique that you encounter while mapping will save you way more time than you spend showing loot after killing a boss.

This problem is specific to unique items that have more than one item on the base. The filter cannot distinguish between different uniques on the same base. This is the same reason that trash unique heavy belts look exactly the same as a Mageblood from a filter perspective.

Some uniques are able to break out of this by having special properties (like having all white sockets, for example), but for 99% of them, there's no way for the filter to know.

You're either hiding every unique heavy belt (or unique bismuth flask), or you're showing them all. There's no in-between.
Sadly the filters on console don’t ‘exist’, apart from the default one they’re Neversink filters. These are made by a ‘player’ and only made for PC and its market. What we get is a port of those filters under the assumption our market will be the same or similar, nothing could be further from the truth based in our minuscule player base compared to PC.
There is likely nothing GGG can do about this, Neversink is unlikely to ever include a console market version.
What you can do is use filterblade.xyz (the Neversink customisation website) to make your own filters with your own ‘everything’ from icons, colours, sounds (to a limited extent) and of course what is and isn’t shown. This site is complex and takes some time to learn but is extremely useful. I encourage using it (as I do every league).
