Need Help Using PS5 controller (MACBOOK PRO)

I've been trying for hours to find a way to fix this without any success.

I'm trying to play this game on a Macbook Pro M2 with a PS5 controller. I've successfully paired my PS5 controller to it via bluetooth (and also tried with a ubc-c to usb-c which doesn't fix the issue). Steam recognises the controller and I can use it when on 'big picture' mode to navigate the menus and launch the game. However, once the game launches, the only thing that works is the 'trackpad' to move the cursor - no other button works at all. I've also tried several different controller 'layouts', I've tried both enabling and reenabling steam overlay (doesn't work with it on or off) and tried connecting the controller both before and after booting the game. I've made sure in the macbook 'input' settings to toggle steam to 'allow'. Nearly everything I could think of.

I feel I've tried as much as I can but am still missing something. Does anyone else have any ideas that could get this to work?
