XBOX character select doesn't work in-game, never had this issue in previous seasons

After choosing a character and playing and then deciding to play a different character - choose character select option in the menu and what happens is the game continues and never goes to character select menu - instead the game continues but you lose all control options and it never goes to the character select menu.

The only way to choose a different character to play while in-game is to quit the game and restart it.

this is terrible and never had this issue in previous seasons
