Terrible lag spikes in evenings - past 3 weeks

At about 8pm Eastern every night, my connection turns into consistent lag spikes for the rest of the night. On an ethernet cord.

Trace is too short to be absolutely sure, which is why it's asked to make it 300-500 seconds.

You are either getting packet loss at your third or 5th hop. 3rd hop is your ISP, 5th isn't.

Either way, contact your ISP. Tell them you are getting PL and it's affecting you ability to do what you want to online. Make sure that they see your MTR, as that's the proof that they need to see that something is borked. If it's a cogentco issue, they will only be able to forward this up to them to try and get resolved.

Ok thanks. Would it help if I ran it again?

It could help narrow it down yes. I am inclined to believe that it's your third hop where you are getting your issues though as the node right after that shows loss as well, it just didn't creep along to that 5th node during your trace. With the levels of ping on your averages and worst, that's also a bit of an indicator as well.

Feel free to post a new one and I'll take a gander when I am free - reality goblin (the wife) got her claws into me. ;)

Haha I totally get that.

Here is my new one: https://pastebin.com/VKEL61u7
Hrrrmm, that trace is a bit different.

You're still getting PL in the trace, but this time it looks like it's GGG's provider where it starts. Also, you are getting some heavy spikes at your second hop (it doesn't really affect your averages, but you go to about a 5th of a second there), and then when you hit cogentco again things get worse.

I'd still forward that first trace to your ISP and see if there is anything they can assist with. You'll have to put up with their troubleshooting steps, but you never know. I'd also see if they can or are willing to forward this up the chain to cogentco to see if anything can be done as well.

Unfortunately, GGG isn't offering tech support at the moment, they haven't since the Pandemic started, so I highly doubt you'd get anything done sending that second trace to them, but you can always try. At worst, they'll tell you to post on the forums as they don't do tech support right now.

One other piece of advice you can try is using a VPN. There are a few free option floating around and some paid ones have free trials. You could try a couple out if you are so inclined. It would change the path that your data takes and get you around those cogentco nodes at the very least where a lot of your troubles sit. Personally, I use NordVPN and they have been great, but that's me. Take that for what it's worth. Just note though that it will trigger GGG's security feature and ask you to get the code from email etc since their system will see you as logging in from a new location.

Appreciate you looking at it again. The first trace was with the VPN on and the 2nd was with it off. I kinda figured it was on GGG's end because certain instances are better/worse than others in the evening.

I'll still reach out to my ISP though. Thanks again.
Yeah, it looks like it depends on which instance server you are hitting where the issues start to crop up. Wish I could have helped more, but at least we know where the issues are.

GL :)

I find it funny that this only happens with PoE and I see these post about it's our ISP and the hops. Sorry I don't think this is true. I have even tried a VPN and changed my connection multiple times. This always happens at the same time with PoE ONLY. I can go play any other online game and my ping is 100% fine.
