This lucky vaal corruption seems good, but in practice not so much

Rarity: Rare
Carrion Spiker
Fiend Dagger

I have only been playing for a month or so, but I threw a vaal orb on a fairly nice dagger and got this:

--------
Rune Dagger
Quality: +20% (augmented)
Physical Damage: 36-144 (augmented)
Elemental Damage: 3-59 (augmented)
Critical Strike Chance: 6.50%
Attacks per Second: 1.20
Weapon Range: 10
--------
Requirements:
Level: 60
Dex: 58
Int: 123
--------
Sockets: G-G-G
--------
Item Level: 83
--------
Adds 3 to 59 Lightning Damage (implicit)
--------
Socketed Gems are Supported by Level 20 Increased Critical Strikes
Socketed Gems are supported by Level 20 Elemental Damage with Attacks
Socketed Gems are Supported by Level 16 Cold Penetration
45% increased Physical Damage
50% increased Cold Damage
78% increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells
36% increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills
--------
Corrupted
--------
Shaper Item

At first I was super excited, but whenever I actually try using it on my summoner, first as cyclone, then various blades, ice golem, etc ... it's just not that great. Any ideas or comments>

its not great because, no offence, you're new and have no idea what you're doing.

As a summoner, it provides you 0 stats. Because your minions do all the work. if a mod doesnt say 'minions' on it, it doesnt help them.

YOU want something like

Now, even as a weapon, that dagger is all over the place. "Ele with attacks" ONLY works with an attack skill, as does the %phys damage AND the added lightning damage. While crit for spells is... for spells. they dont help each other at all.

Cold pen and %cold damage both work for all cold damage, so you COULD attempt 'frost blades'. But the weapon has awful attack speed and pretty poor damage.

In short, it's a bad weapon because it doesnt have enough dps for an attack skill, and doesnt have enough valuable mods for a spellcaster.

this is closer to a 'good' caster weapon, and by all means it isnt great. but all of the mods work together
You are exactly right because that is the wand I actually use:

Rarity: Rare
Havoc Spire
Convoking Wand
--------
Wand
Quality: +15% (augmented)
Physical Damage: 35-64 (augmented)
Critical Strike Chance: 7.00%
Attacks per Second: 1.49 (augmented)
--------
Requirements:
Level: 72
Str: 146
Int: 242
--------
Sockets: B-B-R
--------
Item Level: 85
--------
Can roll Minion Modifiers (implicit)
--------
6% increased Attack Speed
16% increased Cast Speed
+1 to Level of all Minion Skill Gems
Minions have 20% increased Attack Speed
Minions have 21% increased Cast Speed
Minions deal 54% increased Damage (crafted)

Of course, an experienced player steered me to it. Is there a resource for exactly how things work? I would like to do some crafting, but I need to know exactly what I am doing or I will just burn more currency.

Also, how do you get an item to show like the rollover image on this board?
I am a newer player too and I found this guide to be a very helpful intro to the concept of effective crafting:

This is another helpful guide with some more advanced concepts:

if you're logged into the forums, linking items like i did is very simple.

Step 1: hit reply. the text box you type replies into needs to be open.
step 2: above and left, you should see one of your character portraits. click the portrait. This opens up that characters inventory, and a list of all your characters + stashes.
step 3: navigate to the item you want to link within that popup.
step 4: Left click the item you want to link. then find the little (X) button on the top right of your inventory screen, to come back here.

you SHOULD see

"linkItem location="Weapon" character="Diesa_Delve" x="0" y="0""

in brackets, in your reply box. that means the item has been linked. you can use the 'preview' button next to 'submit' to verify that your linked item shows up.
