The "Hilda's Hunt" quest cannot be completed

I died after killing the designated beast boss by the NPC. Then I couldn't re-enter the map. The task wasn't completed, the NPC didn't provide me with a new beast boss to kill, and I couldn't even have a conversation with the NPC's camp. I was completely unable to unlock this NPC.
