Game crashes

Hello fellow PC crashers,

To keep it simple and keep it short, I assume you're reading this because you have had the game client crash under multiple circumstances: loading a new area, trying to open the client, performance issues all over the place causing you to endlessly swap between Vulkan, DX12, DX11. You've probably lowered all your settings up and down around the clock, tried making sure windows settings and graphics cards settings were aligned and yet still instability. So, after personally having issues with these on and off during poe 2 early access, I finally found a solution and wanted to post in case it could help any fellow exiles. :)

1: Go into your Bios and make sure you DO NOT have XMP enabled on your ram.
Less importantly I would also advise against general overclocking of the cpu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further Optimizations if you're having frame rate issues.

2: If you're running an Nvidia card:
Turn OFF In-Game HDR: Open Path of Exile 2, go to the graphics options, and make sure the internal HDR setting is Disabled. Activate RTX HDR:Open your NVIDIA app and select the Graphics menu on the left side.Select Path of Exile 2 from your app profiles.Scroll down to the AI/Feature section and toggle RTX HDR to On. Afterwards, set the power management mode to Perfer Maximum Performance.

3: Go to windows display settings. Turn ON Windows HDR. Go to advanced display and make sure your Refresh rate (FPS cap) is set to the highest. In game, go to options - graphics. Max out the target framerate. Set background FPS cap to 30 (advised). I leave foreground unchecked and with a Gsync monitor (also enabled in the global settings from earlier) this has my frame rates outside of town solid at my monitor refresh rate cap of 175.

4: I also use Dx12, have an RTX 4090, Windowed Fullscreen, VSYNC is off, Dynamic resolution on. Upscale is Nvidia DLSS. Quality of image. Most all of the rest is all preference.

For my situation, I never realized XMP was what was causing the endless stream of crashes from 0.1. It gets a bit technical, but the gist of it is that most of the software fixes I searched on forums, google, AI with were just band-aids on a problem caused by my RAM. Here is why those other fixes seemed like the culprit: the unstable XMP profile was masquerading as software bugs. Why the Other Fixes Seemed Real. The nvoglv64 Error: Your NVIDIA driver didn't crash because the graphics files were broken. It crashed because the unstable XMP memory timing fed corrupted data straight to your GPU. The VertexFlipBookOffset Missing Nodes: The game wasn't missing textures because of a bad game file. The unstable RAM dropped the data packet containing that texture while loading the zone. The engine saw "nothing" and assumed the node didn't exist. The Launcher Flashing and Closing: The launcher closed instantly because it tried to load your saved settings from an unstable memory address and crashed before the window could even draw.

Not exactly the idea launch day I envisioned, but wanted to get this out there in case it helps even 1 frustrated exile :)

I dont have any XMP profile enabled, I did not play 0.4 but used to get the same crashes in 0.3 (Not sure how I fixed it). Now with the latest patch it's unplayable, after 15-20mins the game hangs and if I am not quick enough with alt + tab then my whole PC hangs and needs a hard restart

Definitely not my hardware as POE is the only title that have this issue. Now I have read that it's not exclusive to POE and might be a Windows related problem, I cannot confirm as I haven't played any other games that has the same issue

This sounds very similar to me. Constantly losing performance (one drop, not gradual) then after a while of struggling along the whole game freezes, as well as my entire PC if I don't catch it quickly.

I've had to hard power off my PC so many times today, its getting pretty frustrating.

Specs for posterity:

CPU - AMD 7800X3D
GPU - RTX 3080
RAM - Corsair 2x16GB

EDIT: After managing to get my task manager up as things were freezing again, I saw Wallpaper Engine had very high GPU usage. Closed that and it immediately went back to normal and I haven't had any issues since, besides the rendering engine crash that everyone gets.
