Essence of Virtue Urgent clarification needed!

Does the 1% of life gained by strength motes disappear when you lose a strength mote? Or does it essentially stay as overflow health?

For example, if you have 2200 health with 10 strength motes, and you take 10 hits worth 20 health are you left with 2000 health, or is the 1% per mote removed with the motes leaving you with 1800 health causing you to take extra damage per lost mote?
