Six link skill SLOTS vs skill gems

In poe1 it's pretty easy to get a six link and you can swap many different skills in an out and just have to change the socket colors. . You can try things out and experiment.
But in poe2 you have to six link a skill gem and then you are fully committed to that skill.
Wouldn't it be better to just change it to six linking your available skill slots instead of a specific gem? That way you can change things up as you go and not feel like you wasted a greater/perfect jeweler. Especially leveling wise, you use skills in the campaign that you eventually drop out later in maps
