At what point do I want to focus on negating the -60% Chaos Resistance?
|
Just got to epilogue. I know I want to get 3k life (don't have yet) and 75% on all elemental resists (already have) before starting maps. I am just wondering, when I'm gearing now (will be looking at player market), should I be trying to get chaos resistance too? If not, what level maps do I start caring about that?

So - just to provide some context, the Chaos Resistance cap is 75%, and you will want to hit that at some point in the not-all-that-massively distant future.
At this point you should be aiming to at least reach 0% Chaos Resistance. Personally speaking I probably wouldn't have prioritised capping Fire, Cold, and Lightning without having any Chaos Resistance whatsoever on your equipment, but it is what it is. One of the reasons for that is attempting to gain Chaos Resistance is almost certainly going to entail replacing a bunch of gear you just bought, so trying to progress all four resistance stats somewhat in unison might be something to aim for on your next character. For now just do what you can. GGG do not offer first-party Technical Support.

Well the ele cap I have from gear right now is from gear I bought in like late Act 6. I put off buying more gear til maps to have more chaos orbs to spend. And got only I think one or two kind of small upgrades finishing the rest of the campaign. It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to afford to hit 3k life though unless I also give up a lot of elemental resist. So needing +life +ele resist +chaos resist and also on some pieces +dex or +str I will not be able to afford for a while. Hopefully I can grind low maps as long as I find entertaining to get my own drops or at least get more orbs to be able to afford stuff.

It's difficult to be overly precise with your website profile not allowing us to view your characters directly; all we can go on is the class you're playing and the league you're in.
If you avoid using the likes of Chaos Orbs for crafting, you should be able to pick up some 'good enough' equipment for minimal investment at this stage of the league. For example, looking just at rings; https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Mirage/rPwojwvGHQ The above is a rather cynical search that only cares about Life and Resistances. But equipment where you're not overly fussed about sockets (e.g. 'cause there aren't any) allow you to pick up some solid defensively focused gear - particularly on classes like the Hierophant, which usually aren't overly interested in burning equipment prefixes or suffixes on scaling their damage. Like, literally having two Chaos Orbs to rub together could potentially go quite far; ![]() Naturally, you could make a similar play on the amulet. GGG do not offer first-party Technical Support.

Hey, sorry, I didn't realize character profiles here defaulted to private. I just made it public. So one of the things I need to do is upgrade a lot of my equipment slots to have more armor, from being higher level gear. But like my chest needs 3 red 3 blue all linked, for my early maps build. Is it better to get a yellow base (cuz it would be cheaper) and then craft the sockets onto it? I honestly haven't done any bench crafting yet, since most upgrades have come from getting stuff on the player market.

If you are playing this morning and still need gear to balance your resists, I can help. I have a ton saved for all levels. Hit me up in game. Currently playing "Royals_Pale_Image".
Otherwise, your gear can easily be upgraded from the market for cheap, as others have noted. A ring and belt are great places to get major resists easily. Most of your gear is early game pick-up-off-the-floor bad items that can easily be upgraded. Get movement speed and resists on your boots. I can go on, but pretty much every single piece can be upgraded for cheap. |

For mapping, you can get away -60% chaos resists for a long time - just avoid Jun missions and the maps with physical as extra-chaos and you're good!
You need to upgrade your chaos resist when you start doing 8 mod/unidentified/Nightmare maps, or when you want to level up after 93+. Last edited by 6_din_49#4066 on May 24, 2026, 2:16:47 PM

take my advice with a grain of salt since i didnt played in like years and just did a fresh start on league just hitted maps myself...
but you could bypass chaos res for a really long time lol and depend on the content you wanna do you could even get to 100 with negativ chaos res lol that was befor 16.5 or 17 maps too when T15 was the norm and T16 were the top tier content... right now i focus on life / capped res and Massiv overcap res on fire for RF sustain and woudlnt bother with chaos till red maps atleast my main troubles are atm phy hits or general low life pool with only 3.3k life and no def layers beside res cap ... 30 Shores with Double Pack / Breach / Max Sextants https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2006424/page/1
