0.5 Upgraded Uniques Concern

So in the 0.5 reveal they mentioned that we could upgrade uniques to make them more endgame viable. I desperately want this to be good. But I just can't feel it.
The examples they showed simply don't look like they are all that "buffed." Unless the upgrading is scalable and the uniques can be upgraded a LOT.
For example, I would LOVE to use three particular spears, the Splinter of Loratta, the Tyranny's Grip, and Skysliver.

Loratta because of the near infinite poison scaling.
Tyranny for the splash damage.
Skysliver for the sheer shenanigans you might be able to do with the min to max only damage value.

BUT
Loratta right now has 15-17 damage.
Tyranny has 30-36.
Skysliver well... Has 1-120.

The upgrading of the uniques didn't look like they gave all that much damage. So the examples they gave for the upgraded weapons are:

Hrimnor's Hymn Two-Handed Mace
Double Vision Crossbow
Amor Mandragora Talisman
Serle's Grit One-Handed Mace.

Going with their max damages that they showed only.
Hrimnor's Hymn went from 59 to 238. a 303.39% increase.
Double Vision went from 63 to 178. a 182.54% increase.
Amor Mandragora went from 42 to 174. a 314.29% increase.
Serle's Grit went from 84 to 126. a 50% increase.

So the Hrimnor's Hymn damage numbers rolled roughly in the middle for their example. It's highest base roll is 66 so a 303.39% increase is 266. And this is WITH a 98% increased physical damage roll, (Tier5 I think) as one of the weapons prefixes.
Taking that into consideration. The lowest damage level 70+ rare Two-Handed Mace the Ruination Maul. Give it the 98% increased physical damage, and the Ruination Maul's damage is 302. So being 100% fair with the weakest possible rare Two-Handed Mace, it still outstrips the Upgraded Unique. So I guess when GGG said that they made it so Uniques would be more viable in endgame... I guess they meant to say that the Uniques are still completely worthless in endgame but you can use them better in Tier 1 maps.
Because using the worst Two-Handed Mace and getting two Tier 1 rolls for the physical damage increase. You are looking at 740 damage. This is not including the Physical damage % and Accuracy roll that you can use for the third prefix.

So I hate to say it but the Unique upgrader, unless IF it allows for multiple upgrades... Will end up being worthless. I hope I am wrong but... This is GGG we are talking about.

They're probably not meant to be the very end game thing but just something to use while you craft a better one.

Clearly. But that is precisely my point, it is not even remotely close to being actual endgame viable. And "Endgame Viable" are the literal words they chose to use while they explained the upgrading NPC. I like what they planned for the upgrades but I just think its a massive nothing burger. The upgrades are literally going to do nothing to the game overall.
Example. Take every single build currently being played. How many of them use a unique as your primary weapon? And don't mix up those that have a Unique that they flip flop to for weapon swapping or those that have a unique but the build predominately doesn't even use it at all.

Sure one could argue that the reason why there are barely any right now is because the upgrader doesn't exist yet. BUT when it does exist. It doesn't take any effort at all if you know even the tiniest amount of crafting to get a rare weapon that eclipses these upgraded uniques.

That is my primary concern. The concern of, making a change that does something, but in reality does nothing to build variety.

BUT we will only know if the upgrader allows for multiple upgrades or better overall upgrades once patch notes drop or the actual release of the patch. So I really hope I am wrong. But from what was shown doesn't give me a vote of confidence. Kinda like the RF minion staff. With the information we have, it will not be viable as a main source of damage.

So, we shall see.
I got the same idea exactly, it didn't really seem to me all that exciting or revolutionary, 0*303.39 is still 0, even as temporary they don't really qualify. Never had I ever been in situation where my gear sucked THAT much to be outclassed with what they showed. I wonder if it's one time action or per-level scaling. Most likely not and is the former because we can't have nice things.

Precisely. They showed that it has a material cost of the new materials that will drop in 0.5. So I am hoping that you can constantly upgrade them. OR at the very least the upgrade to your level would truly give damage comenserate to endgame standards. WHAT is the standard? Well... What is your "average" rare weapon stats like? The average rare is significantly better than the Two-Handed rare example I gave above and that was already significantly better already.

Ergo... If what we see is all we get...
