Leveling Quarterstaves and Spears in Act 1 is PAIN compare to other weapon types

Since we have new ascendancies that are Huntress and Monk, I am pretty sure that some ppl will try those first.
For spears we have what? Whirling Slash + Twisters combo that is painfully slow and wonky. On top of that it's losing to basic Spear Throw in terms of damage. Parry + Disengage + Frenzy Charged Explosive Spear. Very high risk setup that migth end you being heavy stunned, but if you win... ehm it still sucks. Itstill worse that basic Spear Throw. Lightning Spear. Absolutely lacks any single target potential so you still need to setup some examples from above. Rake + Disengage. Rake provide good base damage but you have barely any bleeding magnitude. Before you acquire Herald of Blood, Rake is awful I dunno what might be a solution here. Tune up some skills? Buff base physical damage on Spears from level 1 to level 14? Make Storm Lance a tier 3 skill instead of tier 5? Also Bucklers are kinda meme. You rather equip Focus to get elemental damage increase and resistances or just rather go Scepters or Shields. Nobody uses Bucklers which means nobody uses Parry. Parry is insane meme. Some kind of sick joke. Quarterstaves early on are kinda mediocre since day one Glacial Cascade + Frozen combo is insanely clunky. While you setting up all of this you already getting swarmed by wolves in Grelwood Same for Killing Palm + Falling Thunder. Ueeeegh gain Power Charge to make Falling Thunder be decent what are we doing here??? Again we talking about combos that is too much hassle with lottle to no payoff. Later we get Tempest Bell but what we gonna do with it??? Slapping it by Basic Attack??? But no! You cant! It requires other available skills to use for it's activation. So you ending up placing a Bell do maybe 3 attack and it dissapears. What could be the solution here? I dunno. Buff the base physical damage of early level QStaves from level 1 to 14? Move Ice Strike from tier 5 to tier 3? New tier 1 tier 3 skills?? Spears and QStaves starts to feel good in Act 2 but before that it ranges from miserable to clunky early on. You can really see the diffirence when you start playing those weapon types after Bow, Crossbow, Talismans or even Maces My 0.4 leaguestarter: Lightning Spear Amazon https://poe.ninja/poe2/profile/default_mp3-9394/vaal/character/fava_amazonls Last edited by default_mp3#9394 on May 15, 2026, 11:19:42 AM Last bumped on May 16, 2026, 5:34:45 AM

I have a lot of complaints about this game, but the functionality and effectiveness of Whirling Slash and Twisters, even in act 1, is not one of them.
This skill took me in a non-meta build and non-meta class easily through campaign all the way to totally trivializing endgame content to the point where it wasn't even fun. I wonder if you're not using it the right way and triple charging the whirling slash before firing the twisters. Pushing yourself as you whirling slash can also move you a little and do decent damage in itself. Helps to add the +AoE size gem supports for this. Past act 1 its also not hard to spec into a few skills to create an elemental surface and get an essentially free + 50% damage. You'll have to up your button requirement from 2 to 4 to do so. Frost Bomb + Ice Nova for example. These skills are OP in my opinion. I'll grant you most of it on the rest of spear skills being not great early on or in end game. Acceptable player power has changed since 0.1. Druid skills have good AoE, damage, and speed. Most melee classes do not meet this standard.
Monk starting skills are just bad. More than damage adjustments, they need functional adjustments. Spears do decent damage early but require 19 buttons by level 2. This is one of the problems with GGG. Development is heavily focused on adding new things. Many issues in other areas take a while (if ever) to be addressed. |
