Defensive Mechanics Balance and Hybrid Build Effectiveness
|
Currently, there is a noticeable imbalance among defensive mechanics in the game.
Maximizing Energy Shield (ES) or Armour provides stable, predictable survivability. Evasion, on the other hand, suffers heavily from randomness. While its total avoidance can technically simulate a high Effective Health Pool (EHP) over time via the current formula, it fails to protect the character from actual spike damage that results in fatal or near-fatal one-shots. Even the Deflect mechanic after a failed evasion check still triggers only by chance, which prevents it from being a reliable defensive buffer. This issue is most acutely felt in hybrid setups that combine multiple layers of defense (Armour + Energy Shield, Armour + Evasion, Evasion + Energy Shield). Splitting investment across different mechanics prevents any of them from reaching a meaningful threshold of effectiveness. This is especially punishing in melee combat, where builds cannot instantly clear packs before making contact (a playstyle the developers explicitly stated they want to avoid). My proposals aim to increase the baseline effectiveness of defenses at lower investment, making hybrid builds highly competitive and more balanced relative to each other: 1) Reworking the Armour Damage Mitigation Formula: from: Armour / (Armour + 10 * Damage) to: Armour / (1.1 * Armour + 6.9 * Damage) (Limitation: Damage mitigated per hit cannot exceed 95% of the character's Maximum Life) 2) Overhauling the Deflect Mechanic on Failed Evasion: - Make Deflect trigger with a 100% guaranteed chance - Change the deflected damage from a fixed value (currently 40% with minor scaling on the Passive Skill Tree) to a dynamic value that scales with your Evasion rating, using the following formula: Deflect % = Evasion / (1.9 * Evasion + (8.1 / (1 + Deflect Efficiency Multiplier)) * Damage) (Limitation: Damage prevented by Deflect per hit cannot exceed 80% of the character's Maximum Life) 3) Introducing a Diminishing Returns Coefficient for Energy Shield - Calculate actual Energy Shield using a scaling reduction modifier that will only impact extremely high-end investments: Actual Energy Shield = Raw Energy Shield / (1 + 0.00005 * Raw Energy Shield) Last bumped on May 15, 2026, 8:38:40 AM
