Skill gem sockets and a little about Spirit.
|
Hello everyone.
I haven't played much, but I've played enough to repeatedly run into a very clear problem: the number of skill gem sockets. Originally, it was assumed that combining skills would yield more power than a single-button build. However, when I try to use the tools provided to me, building a piano of useful skills, I end up with not enough room for Spirit skills. This is solved by not being able to accumulate 300+ Spirit to use more useful skills (after all, not everyone can use the Sceptre). Meanwhile, there are single-button builds that still have 3-4 empty skill sockets, and their character power is more stable then combo builds. The provided solutions regarding Unset Ring, which can provide two more sockets, are not optimal, as they significantly reduce the build potential (all uniq rings). Like using a sceptre to get more useful Spirit-reserving skills. I'm very skeptical of the current Spirit sources and the values on Spirit support gems. 40 Spirit for 2% Life regeneration? Ultimately, using skills built into items becomes almost necessary, since they don't take up sockets. I don't know the root of the problem. Is it that combining skills isn't always justified, or that nine sockets aren't enough. But I can suggest making it so that additional sockets can be obtained on any character, under certain conditions. For example, skills in sockets exceeding the limit deal reduced damage and have an increased cost. I can't even imagine how Witch Hunter with its weapon swap will be implemented if it's so severely limited in sockets. my hideouts - https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3228515 Last bumped on May 9, 2026, 8:10:48 AM

" You can't have 2 or 3 primary skills during fight bro. It wouldn't bring better results and overall will you get lost in translation until you end up ton of times. Use one skill as primary and one as secondary to only boost the primary if needed. All OP builds use one button clear. Is a guaranteed win method. |

" I somewhat agree with you as this is how its turned out. But one of the main reasons they moved away from poe1's system of skill gems on gear as it only allowed 1 or 2 6Link skills on most builds and those skills carried. part of the goal of 'methodical combat' was to have multiple skills in our toolkits used for different situations. 2 primary skills is definitely viable, maybe not optimal though. I like whirling assualt + flicker strike as my primary skills. But both of those are boosted by all the same things. trying to work in a mace/spear skill on my offhand set never worked well. Please GGG, I need my sparkly crown MTX in PoE2.

The root of the problem is that GGG abandoned their stated vision for this game to have more meaningful and rewarding combat that would make combos necessary or even useful.
When you can boost one skill to able to wipe out every enemy on screen with one click then trying to combo several skills in a grand manner becomes not only unnecessary, but a disadvantage. Using lower damage attacks and skills that build up into a powerful combo does nothing but leave more enemies around you alive, increase your risk of taking damage or dying, and slow you down. Watch the fantastic .5 video if you haven't, especially the part where you can trigger multiple bosses to fight at one time. It was like 5-7 bosses. You're not building combos in that. There's no deliberate, methodical, strategic combat involved. It's spam something as powerful as you can, as fast as you can. One shot all of them before they one shot you. There was another quote about the goal with big bosses being that you see one of their attacks before they go down. You're trying to gear your character to play a game they stopped making several patches back. Last edited by AbyssianOne#1625 on May 9, 2026, 8:14:04 AM
