Ignite is a boring mechanic compared to other dots and an idea how to make it stand out
|
Other dots in the game have something that makes them unique - Bleed deals additional damage upon movement and Poison is chaos damage and as such goes through energy shields. I'm well aware about Blackflame Covenant, but that's not the point here. Ignite, in it's base state, is just a dot effect with no gimmick involved.
I am personally not sure whether Flammability as a mechanic is intended to hinder the ability to ignite easily or to make it a an easier process, but here's the question - if you make the enemy highly flammable, shouldn't they burn better? I think it could be an interesting gimmick if Flammability, after the enemy is already ignited, didn't just sit there as a deadweight debuff and instead started rapidly consuming itself to make ignite deal more damage(perhaps it could instead make the ignite deal damage faster by consuming the remaining duration akin to Rupture from poe 1). Thematically it's like flammable objects in real life - they start intense fires and quickly go out when the flammable material consumes itself in the flame. That way players get an incentive to continue interacting with flammability both if they lucked to hit an early ignite(to cap out flammability and make ignite stronger, thematically it's like stoking fire) and if they maxed the flammability out before proccing an ignite(as flammability would be consuming itself fast you'd want to continue applying it for the flammability to not run out and keep applying the buff). The quantity of the ignite's buff could also depend on current amount of flammability, i.e. for example an ignite that just started at 100% flammability gets like a 100% more(or increased, whatever, i'm not the balancing guy here) and at 50% flammability it only gives 50% more, 20% more at 20% flammability etc. There are many possibilities of how to go about it, I just wish flammability was an actual fun mechanic to play around instead of being a hurdle to overcome to get to play a boring nothingburger of a dot. This way ignite could become it's own niche of a "fast" dot effect. Also ignite refresh gem would get more valuable if ignite ran out real fast. Also please buff frostfire support, with how bad it is it's just not worth it to bust your ass to freeze the entire pack/boss/rare before applying the ignite. Last bumped on Apr 23, 2026, 9:57:59 AM
