Vaal skills for totems

When using a vaal skill(vaal arc) with totems, the totem fires the skill once and then sits there doing nothing but looking pretty. It feels bad to me and like an unnecessary draw back. I feel like it should instead just start firing the normal skill after it spends the vaal version. If I'm missing something why the way it is currently is a good thing can someone enlighten me? Thanks
