One checkpoint at the start...
Checkpoints should be placed centering areas/zones on maps. Not at the end of paths, or at least- thats fine; but they are not actually useful in any capacity. Dying and walking for an actual couple of minutes, is troll. I know, don't die. Fix your damn checkpoints sometimes this century. Just play the game and try to use a checkpoint. If you find one that is actually useful, it was an accident. I think I have actually found one, early on when the maps are still tiny. Although its also because some of the content entrances are in the middle of the map, so they actually are placed in useful spots accidentally. Oh yeah, and checkpoints also disappear from the tab map. So then if you do want to use one, you have to already know where it is. This also means you have to goto a checkpoint to see if there are checkpoints connecting points you may want to travel to- or you just can't tell. There may be conditions for this, such as going back to base or something to cause a reload, then in the reload the checkpoints don't appear. I think this also happens in the temple, which might be why its impossible to use checkpoints in there- but all the checkpoints are useless, even if you could see them.
