Hollow palm and shields

Hello!

I am playing a monk with Hollow Palm. After accidentally equipping a buckler in my off-hand I was surprised to see that I could still use my quarterstaff skills.

My question is whether this is intended. I've been searching google for a few hours now and I can't find any information on this except google's AI answers which say both that it should work and that it shouldn't, depending on how I ask the question.

Is the shield on your back when you use quarterstaff skills? I think they automatically swap your weapon set. You can double check this with opened inventory.
