Cross-play exists in Path of Exile 2 — so why are microtransactions still locked by platform?
|
I would like to raise a concern about the microtransaction system in Path of Exile 2.
The game now supports cross-play and cross-progression, allowing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation to play together on the same servers while using the same account and characters. This is a huge step forward for the game and for the community. However, there is a major inconsistency when it comes to microtransactions. Purchases made on PC and Xbox are shared between those platforms. If I buy a cosmetic or stash tab on PC, I can use it on Xbox, and vice versa. But the moment PlayStation enters the equation, everything changes: Items purchased on PC or Xbox cannot be used on PlayStation Items purchased on PlayStation cannot be used on PC or Xbox From a player's perspective, this feels extremely confusing and frustrating. We are using the same account and playing on the same servers, yet we are forced to buy the exact same items multiple times depending on which platform we play on. And this is not just a minor inconvenience. Buying the same microtransactions twice is not only frustrating — it also directly impacts players financially. Many cosmetics, stash tabs, and supporter packs are not cheap. For players who enjoy playing on both PC and console, this policy effectively doubles the cost of supporting the game. What makes this situation even more confusing is the transition from Path of Exile 1 to Path of Exile 2. Back in Path of Exile 1, this limitation was easier to understand. The game did not have full cross-platform play, and the console versions were more separated from the PC ecosystem. In that context, platform-locked purchases were understandable. But in Path of Exile 2 the situation has changed significantly. The game now promotes cross-play and shared progression, and players from different platforms are literally playing together in the same world. Because of that, the microtransaction system feels outdated and inconsistent with the rest of the game's design. There is also another important point: many purchases in Path of Exile are not purely cosmetic. Things like stash tabs are essentially quality-of-life features that many long-term players consider almost necessary. Currency tabs, map tabs, fragment tabs, and other specialized storage options are extremely important for players who engage with the game's trading and endgame systems. Because of that, buying them twice is not just re-buying cosmetics — it means paying again for functionality that players already own on the same account. At the moment, the system creates a strange situation: Players can share characters Players can share progression Players can share servers But purchases do not follow the player For a game that encourages cross-platform play, this feels like a major disconnect. I understand that platform store policies may play a role here, but from the player perspective the end result still feels very unfriendly. So I would really appreciate some clarification: Is this limitation caused by PlayStation Store policies, or is it a technical or business decision by Grinding Gear Games? Are there any plans or ongoing discussions about making microtransactions fully account-wide across all platforms in the future? Many modern cross-platform games allow purchases to follow the player once accounts are linked. If Path of Exile 2 is truly embracing cross-platform play, it would make sense for purchases to follow the player as well. Right now it feels like players who enjoy playing on multiple platforms are effectively penalized for supporting the game. I believe many players would appreciate transparency on this topic. Thanks for your time. Last bumped on May 9, 2026, 2:50:57 PM

"This limitation arises from PlayStation’s policies, which restrict the sharing of microtransaction content across platforms. While Grinding Gear Games has worked to ensure a unified experience elsewhere, this particular issue is beyond their control."

This is BS. Cosmetics I'm buying in Diablo 4 on PSN are available when I'm playing on PC it should be no different here. The limitations around this are exactly why I'm not playing POE2. Mainly because of how the stash mechanics work between PC/PlayStation. PlayStation may not want PC/Xbox purchases to work on their Platform, but wth is it limited both ways? Why not just allow me to buy my tabs on PlayStation and use them across both???

" This is correct. Understandably Playstation money-grubbed and doesn't want PC cosmetics to enter their market. Fine, greedy but fine, but GGG is on the other side of the equation. I should be able to buy my stuff in PSN and have it available on PC. That is themselves their own limitation of a failed negotation. The real issue is that a ton of cosmetics are FOMO, for example the amazing paladin and gravewarden cosmetics that I bought on PC I will NEVER EVER EEEEEVEEER see in PS5. It made me so sad that I had to make werewolf just to think that I am not missing my cosmetics. |

Wow. From paying for imaginary horse armor being a universal joke to people genuinely being emotional that they can't always access their horse armor in so few years.

Honestly, this is starting to piss me off.
Why is it that in normal cross-platform games you buy content ONCE — and it’s yours everywhere? You buy it on PC, log in on PS5 or Xbox — everything is there. Skins, cosmetics, battle passes — all synced. Because it makes sense. Because you’re paying for your account, not for a specific device. And then there’s the situation with POE 2. Seriously? In 2026 you expect players to buy the same content MULTIPLE times? On PC, then again on console? What kind of outdated 2010 mindset is this? This isn’t just inconvenient — it straight up feels like a cash grab. Like: “Oh, you want to play on your couch too? Pay again.” Excuse me, what? The player already supported the game. Already spent money. Why should they pay again just because they switched platforms? It’s not a new product. It’s the same account, same character, same items. Especially compared to other games, this looks incredibly greedy and outdated. The industry has moved forward, and this feels like a step backwards. If you’re going to make a cross-platform game — do it properly. Cross-platform isn’t just about progression, it’s also about purchases. Otherwise, it’s not cross-platform. It’s just double dipping. |
