it works for them:
they save in server costs for a few days and get free promo saying

"wow look at how popular this new league is, so busy we keep crashing!
come try it out, must be really good if there's a zillion ppl playing right guys?"

just have a look at the ressource file size of poe1 over the years.

and i think that a doubled size doesn't mean doubled risks for unwanted interactios in the game. i think it's worse

DBD has the same issue. Company does nothing, and the game gets worse in many ways.

But the communities don't vote with their wallet and teach them that they need to do better.
