Unravelling. Am I missing something?

I built a chaos dots Chayula monk, mainly using Contagion and Essence Drain atm. I expected Unravelling to allow the chaos dots to freeze, ignite or shock enemies, but that isn't happening. Nothing I can see would explain why it doesn't work. Am I missing something, or is this a bug?

This is working as intended. Those ailments can only be interacted with through Hits, and the specific entry in the patch notes explicitly clarified that Unravelling isn't supposed to circumvent that. It only allows Chaos Damage to interact with ailments not typically associated with that damage type; it does nothing to affect whether DoTs may do so.

tl;dr: Hits dealing Chaos Damage will work with Unravelling; DoTs will not. This is not a bug.

While affected by Unravelling, your Chaos Damage randomly either also contributes to Freeze buildup, Flammability and Ignite Magnitudes, or Shock chance - changing which it contributes to every two seconds.

Freeze wrote:
Freeze is an Ailment that causes targets to be unable to move or act, and lasts 4 seconds by default.

Cold damage from Hits Contributes to Freeze Buildup on enemies until they become Frozen.

Flammability wrote:
Flammability is a Debuff that provides the chance for Hits to Ignite the target. It is not itself an Ailment, but is closely associated with Ignite, which is.

Fire damage from Hits Contributes to the Magnitude of Flammability, so Hits that deal more Fire damage will Ignite more often.

The chance for a Hit to Ignite a target is determined by the total Magnitude of Flammability on the target, including the amount added by that Hit.

Shock wrote:
Shock is an Ailment that causes targets to take 20% increased damage, and lasts 4 seconds on players or 8 seconds on non-players by default.

Lightning damage from Hits Contributes to chance to Shock enemies.

The Consuming Questions Notable has been renamed to Unravelling, and no longer grants You cannot Recharge Energy Shield, or Mana Leech effects also Recover Energy Shield. Instead, it now grants Chaos Damage from Hits also Contributes to Ignite Chance and Magnitude, Freeze Buildup, or Shock Chance, changing every 2 seconds.

Thank you for the explanation. You made it very clear. I did not know that about ailments.
This whole build was a waste of time. It wouldn't hurt if Unravelling itself clarified "...your Chaos Damage from hits randomly either...". It wouldn't require much alteration.
Then again, maybe I'm the only idiot who didn't know about only hits generating ailments.
You're very welcome - and I wouldn't call you an idiot. :)

It's possible the reason they don't is so that if something else in the game enables DoTs to interact with ailments GGG don't have to choose between either the tooltips being misleading or the tooltips needing to become more complex (and, thus, likely more buggy) to account for that possibility.
