Mjolner and The Vertex

I can't seem to find information about this so maybe I'm doing something wrong here? But when I equip my Vertex that has Equipment has no requirements and then equip my Mjolner I can't activate the Thundergod's Wrath. I just get a message that says No Socketed Gems and I am unable to socket any lightning gems. Is this a bug or am I missing something here?
