Ideas for more death-related punishments in maps

- Make loot in inventory contraband, like a heist, that's removed upon death.
- Disable flasks, charms or skills for 10 minutes (think Resurrection Sickness from WoW).
- Partially break player gear on death (could be a tribute to D2).
- Remove all experience for the level and allow us to reclaim it by touching our dead corpse (necromancy theme/effect).
- Corrupt a player gear piece on death.
- Curse the player on death. Inflict a lasting temp chains until map completion (revenge concepts are great!).
- Shrink inventory size (up to a cap, don't want it to be charm problem in D2).
- Remove content from adjacent maps if the player died from the boss.
- Remove remaining revives if the player dies to a boss.
- Do a roulette-wheel and apply 1-2 of the above along with removing the content and stuff.

Progress & Time Punishment

Lock the player’s atlas progression state for the rest of the map (no new bonuses, no influence spread).

Invalidate map completion if death occurs after the boss reaches 50% HP.

Freeze crafting benches for X minutes after death (“your spirit is shaken”).

Delay loot identification: items drop unidentified and can’t be ID’d until map end.

Rollback last passive point gained (returned after next level-up, so it’s temporary).

Information & Control Denial

Disable minimap and overlay for the remainder of the map.

Hide rare/unique affixes on enemies after death (“uncertainty penalty”).

Obscure player stats (DPS, resists, suppression) until map completion.

Suppress audio cues (volatile warning sounds, on-death effects).

Remove buff/debuff icons, forcing “situational awareness”.

Loot & Economy Sadism

Convert some dropped currency into shards instead of full orbs.

Mark items as ‘tainted’: can’t be traded or crafted, only vendored or worn.

Reduce item tier rolls on drops after death (still drop, just worse).

Increase vendor prices temporarily (“death tax”).

Auto-vendor a random non-equipped item on death.

Build Integrity Attacks

Temporarily disable one support gem in a random link.

Randomize flask charges (some spawn empty, some overfilled).

Invert one resistance (fire → cold, etc.) until map end.

Disable ascendancy notables one at a time per death.

Increase mana/life costs of skills (“fatigue”).

Environmental & Encounter Tweaks

Add extra map mods mid-run after death (not shown on the map item).

Empower the boss with a new mechanic after each death.

Respawn cleared packs near the death location.

Reduce shrine effectiveness or corrupt them into negative shrines.

Spawn a stalking nemesis mob that only targets the player.

Psychological / Revenge Systems

Tag the player with a ‘Marked for Failure’ debuff that causes enemies to focus them.

Echo damage: take a % of damage dealt as reflected damage for X seconds after respawn.

Delayed punishment: a random penalty applies in the next map instead.

Death streak scaling: penalties grow non-linearly per consecutive death.

“Mercy system” that claims to help but only triggers after excessive deaths.

Meta-Level Spite

Lock one hotkey (random, including movement skills).

Reduce camera zoom-out for the rest of the map.

Shuffle UI panels (inventory opens character sheet, etc.).

Change loot filter strictness temporarily.

Force rebind confirmation on exit (“Are you sure you want to leave while dishonored?”).


AI has generated a few idea that you currently have implemented. I advise that you take its overlap as evidence of success.

That would be pay-to-lose, and maybe a little excessive.
We're looking to piss off the player, not make him fuck off completely. If we piss them off, they will come back and we can piss them off again. I hope that helps clear things up.
