Spellslinger and Wolf Pack/companions

It seems that having a duelling wand breaks companion gems. I had no issue with spirit, attributes, or anything else. Nothing socketed in spellslinger, but I was unable to activate wolf pack. No error displayed, it said "right click to activate," but right clicking had no effect. Taking off the duelling wand allowed me to activate the companion gems. Equipping the wand immediately disabled it.

It seems spellslinger might be coded to be a companion somehow.
