AMD 7800X3D idling at 80C in town -- normal?
|
Seems rather high since nothing is happening other than a few other players running around in town. I am asking because my computer keeps powering off in the middle of game play. It isn't a crash to desktop, it's an instant shut-off that I can only assume is cpu thermal self protection. I have a noctual NS-15 fan and have reinstalled to make sure there wasn't an issue (identical temps after reinstalling).
Anyone else getting this problem and am I correct that it's thermal shutdown? Last bumped on Dec 16, 2025, 11:13:44 AM

Could be, but a complete shutdown usually just means something is wrong with your hardware, which could be anything. If you suspect that it's the CPU then try enabling ECO mode and see if that helps. If it doesn't try a lower GPU clock, disable XMP, removing some memory etc.... Basically just poke around see what helps the issue.
80°C sounds fine to me, but well for comparison here's what my game looks like with 4k60hz + NIS: GPU 7900XT = 90W @ 49°C CPU 7950X = 20W @ 53°C Last edited by yunharla3000#5123 on Dec 16, 2025, 10:57:25 AM

TY. Power Save mode did bring it down by 10C. Still nowhere what yours is though. I only get those temps when I'm not playing games. When I look around it seems like 48-53 is a fairly normal idle temp for my CPU.

yeah that sounds normal as well. What's your total system power consumption? Heavy load vs idle?
