Real Reasons Why Lythara is a Terrible Boss Fight
|
The short version of why Lythara has the worst fight design that I can remember boils down to victory having nothing to do with skill, just RNG and brute force.
Let me explain in brief: She can fill the entire arena with damaging lightning zones that can only be avoided by moving to the other side of the arena. But if you're on the other side of the arena then you can't see her, which means you can't dodge her ranged attacks, which are very strong. And there is nothing you can do to stop this from happening. Let me deal with some of the dumber excuses I've seen people use to defend this terrible boss. 1. "There is no problem. Everything is fine with this boss". Then why is this the only boss I've been struggling with? Some of the other boss fights were difficult but by learning from my mistakes and tweaking my build they were all manageable. This is the only boss fight that stands out. 2. "Skill Issue". Dodging her attacks doesn't take much skill. Dodging her attacks is actually really freaking easy...if you can see them coming. But often you can't because you need to avoid her lightning zones. 3. "Just dodge using the audio cues." Often she doesn't say the audio cue before firing the attack, it just comes out of nowhere. This happens about half the time, if not more. And since you can't see her the only way to avoid them is by roll-spamming. Which means victory is determined by luck, not skill. 4. "If you dodge the spear throw then she doesn't get a lightning zone." Unfortunately, if you're using any type of summons your dodges don't matter. If her spear hits a summon it spawns a lightning zone. And if your summons are melee then she is guaranteed to hit them because they're right on her. 5. "Just dodge the lightning zones then!" For reasons known only to the Devs (and Satan) there is no cap on how many lightning zones she can have at one time. She can literally cover the entire arena in lightning zones. So the only way to not die is to move to the other section of the arena. But then you can't see her. So the next time she fires a ranged attack (without an audio cue) you're screwed. So it doesn't matter how you play it your victory is determined by luck, instead of skill. I've played jank-ass "Warcraft 3" custom map RPGs that had better boss design than this. And the boss design for the rest of the game is, for the most part, really freaking good. But this is indefensible. It is objectively terrible boss design. I eventually beat her after farming 3 levels, and getting favourable RNG where her spear attacks miraculously missed my melee summons, so she only got like 3 or 4 lightning zones. So in the end the "win" came from a combination of brute force and luck. This might all be fixable if you restrict her to only 2 lightning zones at a time. And fixing the audio cues on her ranged attacks. But other than that I'm really enjoying the game. Last bumped on Dec 14, 2025, 11:45:51 PM

Had a similar experience in the trial of chaos in that bird boss fight, at the time i had the Rings of Doom witch makes exploding circles on the ground, they are usually pretty easy to avoid but do high damage.
Anyway, this boss arena is pretty small and the rings are pretty big, see where we are getting? At some point the ring spawned in the middle, started growing until it filled the entire arena and exploded, killing me in the process |
