Amazon's Elemental Surge Ascendancy Node & Glacial Lance Interaction

Reading the skill's tooltip I realized it mentions:
"Consume surges to cause the Projectiles fired to explode at the end of their flight."

This makes me very bummed out. I wanted to play Glacial Lance with elemental infusions to make use of Huntress' "Harness The Elements" and Monk's "Echoing Frost/Flames/Thunder" nodes. It is possible to proc Elemental Surge but it feels really weird, I have to fire the skill into a wall where it explodes hitting nobody! Sounds very inefficient for killing enemies... For now I'm transitioning to off-hand Quarterstaff with Shattering Palm to make use of Monk's newly introduced Area of Effect and Area Damage nodes. Though, I'm getting a feeling that remaking my character as Monk's Invoker Ascendancy yields better results than trying to play Amazon. Sadness
