How do merchant tabs work?

I have not played since they added them... Is it true you upgrade premium tabs into merchant tabs? Is it discounted that way?
I understand the automated buy/sale options... its prob like those old Japon grinding mmos right? where you can post your shop in your base (in those games it would be in towns) correct me if I am wrong. Just upgrade 1 or 2 at first and get a feel for how much you use it. Unless you plan on beast or map farming as your primary currency generation, you dont need very many.
