Awakened added fire (and I'll assume other +1 level of x gems) don't work in Archdemon Crown

I'm well aware the helm gives -2 level of support but I'm aligned with the stars and got +3 ele support gems bringing it to a total of lvl 6, yet when I socketed it with my main skill (penance brand of dissipation) it doesn't get + level, but when I socket it in another slot it does. So some interaction with the helmet is causing it not to work.
