Controller input for putting Wombgifts in item wombs?

My wife plays on controller, and we've tried literally any controller inputs to try and put her wombgifts into a womb. Most we can get is a red X to show up on the slot, and opening her inventory closes the tree UI. Any other controller users know what we're doing wrong?
