How do top/right skilltree classes mitigate physical damage reasonably nowadays?

I haven't played in like... 5 leagues or something, and physical damage was always a massive problem for any classes I liked playing (top/right in the skilltree).

I used to use "physical damage taken as X" so I didn't get oneshot by literally every single monster in any red map, but... I see GGG is on an absolute tirade over that stat (meanwhile Fourth Vow, Transcendence, and Eternal Damnation still exist??) IDK what's going on there (I'd LOVE to hear the philosophy behind it though!) Maybe they're working on removing them, but only got so far?

But now that that's gone... what do I do?

This bit was kinda ranty but if GGG is reading it might be nice to know how your players feel, but if you're not into that...
Spoiler
I felt like I had the freedom to play almost any skill I want, and "make the build work", which... I haven't even completed all the ubers yet. I was barely strong enough to handle juiced mapping content..

and now I'm POSITIVE I can't even juice a yellow map without shifting physical damage. Or dying 250 times a day? I mean is that the meta now?

Just kinda lost and confused and feel like I'm forced to itemize and play specific skills which the devs have "force balanced" my hand into. It honestly feels like the best way to play is to simply forgo all defenses, accept that you will die 11,476 times, to any and every single thing which touches you, and just kill as much as you can in 6 portals?

Complete honesty?: Doesn't sound like a game I care to play anymore. Maybe I've felt this way for the past few leagues and deep down that's why I don't play anymore, I've just now been able to put it into words?

By the way, ALL of this problem goes away if you just make a game where you can MECHANICALLY avoid all sources of damage, then it's just a difficult test of your reaction speed and anticipation. But with so much shit which just "automatically" hits you... no good...

If I'm hearing you right, you have been away for 2+ years and are mad that you don't know all the in's and out's of the defensive changes? The game wasn't stagnant while you were gone. I don't remember at all what all the different changes were, but you are free to actually read through the various patch notes. I like to scroll through poe.ninja to see what the elites are doing for interactions. Every once in a while I find a nugget of wisdom. You can also visit various build guides to see how other people are surviving.
