They're bringing them back in a future patch as part of the core game but with some changes.

This league is a good example. There's Breach content where enemies rush you non-stop. I was thinking about starting with my Scorching Ray totem build again, but thinking about it for a second, now with my Merc gone that took care of clear, it seemed like a really bad idea. I mean, bossing is absolutely fine, but it has basically no clearing capabilities due to how the skill works, and that's what my Merc was for. Can't even use any explosion stuff because SR doesn't hit and sources of the burning pop are practically non-existent. Man, it sure would be nice to have my Merc back that solved the build's biggest weakness, eh.

standard economy can still be traded. its not THAT bad. in fact low player count increases spread, so while volume is much lower, the higher spread compensates a lot.

Flameblast of Celerity totems are very strong indeed. Played it in Mercs actually. Stonks DPS
