Mapping issues

I've been having this issue when I would be mapping, I would kill a boss, he would drop loot and also release a large Aoe ATTACK killing me before I have a chance to pick up loot dropped. It has caused me to miss many major drops, and the worst part is the portals will close, voiding all my earnings. Is this a bug or what?
