Essence of the abyss not applying to item

It says the item cannot be applied onto my reaping staff ilvl 82

I know it can, i already used one earlier in the crafting process on this item

Attempting to use a Omen of sinistral crystalisation with the essence of abyss on a ilvl 82 reaping staff with 1 prefix and 3 suffixs

You get the message, this item cannot be applied

This was resolved by taking each item out of my character stash. Resetting the game. Then going back into the game and taking the items back out

Had the same issue after using omen of light on a gold ring, bringing it down to 2 prefixes and 3 suffixes.

Tried sinistral crystallisation omen + essence of the abyss but it just put that error in chat.

Followed the workaround here and closed the game with the items in my inventory, then booted the game again. It worked after that.

What didn't work was chucking them in my stash, then loading a different area or restarting the game.
