Can't cast despair since new patch

Hello,

I'm playing and ED contagion lich with the low life setup.

Since the new patch i'm unable to cast despair, it says "Out of life"
The only way to cast it is by removing Eternal life in the ascendancy points. Doing so, casting despair costs me life points and I don't understand why - I have nothing in m'y support gem that have such effect.

I've tried to resocket the despair skill gem and all the support, it doesn't work.

Help please:-)

Just gave it a new try a few minutes ago : i have the same problem.

Am I the only one here ?

Removing the ascendancy skill "Eternal life" is the only way to cast despair again. As soon as I take Eternal life, and even if i'm full life, I cannot cast Despair and still get the "Out of life" message.

Can someone relate to this ?

OK i've found the origin of the problem : Burden of shadows in weapon set 2 + despair in weapon set 2 !

As @seaman#4993 explained, if you cannot pay the cost to cast a skill (a life cost using the Burden of Shadows staff), then you will be unable to cast the skill.

You do not get to cast the skill for free because of Eternal Life, you simply cannot cast it if any of the costs cannot be paid. This is intended and not a bug. You will also be unable to cast a skill in some cases if you reduce a cost to zero.


There are some exceptions for additional effects such as sacrificing life where the benefit obtained from the sacrifice is not dependent upon the amount actually sacrificed (this is why the Extraction support works while having Eternal Life), but that's not the same as being unable to pay a cost.

In Patch 0.3.0, Lich's Eldritch Empowerment Notable was changed from being an added cost to sacrificing energy shield. Now, if you are unable to sacrifice the energy shield you simply don't get the buff (rather than being unable to cast a skill).
